Pet Quality of Life Consultation

We’re here to help

Knowing “when it’s time” is never a clear-cut decision and shouldn’t be treated that way. Assessing your pets quality of life is incredibly difficult. We want to open a discussion about your pet’s quality of life to help inform you and comfort your pet. We strive to inform you on what is going on in your pet’s mind and body in a clear and succinct way. With the information you receive from us, you can objectively decide if euthanasia is an appropriate option or if alternative options are available to help your pet.

There’s no one size fits all

Every pet has different wants and needs. What may be the end of the road for one pet may be six more quality months for another pet. Cat end of life signs can vary dramatically from dog end of life signs. These individual differences are always accounted for and help shape what decisions are made. We will review all pertinent medical records to see what treatments have been provided and give our opinions on the next steps.

The Ohio State University’s Honoring the Bond Program offers an excellent quality of life scale which can be viewed below:

What sets us apart

We come see your pet in their natural environment. In a veterinary hospital your pet will not act as it typically would. They’re usually anxious, brighter than normal, and more stoic when it comes to displaying discomfort outside of their natural environment. An in-home quality of life assessment provides real answers while avoiding the stress of a vet visit.

What to expect during the quality of life assessment

  • 60-90 minute appointment allowing us ample time to discuss your pet’s condition and answer any questions you have.

  • Discuss what exactly your pet’s condition is, how they feel, and their disease trajectory.

  • Walk through a quality of life scale for dogs (and cats) together to help you objectively identify what is going well and what isn’t going well in your pet’s life.

  • Discuss further options to keep your pet comfortable including alternative therapies that may help.

  • Help modify the environment to make it easier for your pet, provide tips to give medications, and help stimulate their appetite.

  • Discuss the timing of euthanasia, the actual process of euthanasia, and begin the planning process when that time comes.

  • Provide materials about coping with the loss of a pet.
